Owls Look To Continue Conference Reigns As Part Of 2010 New England
Alliance Championships To Be Held Saturday At Southern Maine
Buzzards Bay, Mass. -- Westfield State College looks to continue its run of success on both the men's and women's sides on Saturday, February 13th when the Owls will join four other league members in competing at the 2010 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.
This year's MASCAC Championships will once again be held in conjunction with the New England Alliance Championships, as member institutions of the Little East Conference will also participate in the event that will take place at the Costello Sports Complex Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine beginning at 11:30 a.m. EST.
Westfield State claimed its third straight men's crown last February by outdistancing runner-up Fitchburg State by 85 points for the MASCAC title, as senior Marc Gomes (Springfield, Mass.) paced the Owls by taking home three conference individual championships on the day. Westfield State posted a team score of 241 points in topping the Falcons' team score of 156 points, while Worcester State (56 points), Bridgewater State (37 points) and Salem State (10 points) rounded out the MASCAC scoring.
The Owls finished as the runner-up to host Southern Maine in the 2009 New England Alliance Championships, as the Little East champion Huskies posted a team score of 180 points to outdistance the Owls' total of 144 points, with Fitchburg State (79 points) placing third in the Alliance standings.
On the women's side, Westfield State captured its third straight MASCAC championship with a 67-plus point victory over runner-up Worcester State, as the Owls received a pair of individual titles each from Marlee Berg, senior Kerry Arouca (Hanson, Mass.) and junior Rachel Ryan (Westboro, Mass.) to post a team score of 234 points and outdistance the Lancers' score of 166.50 points. Bridgewater State (50 points) edged out Fitchburg State (49 points) for third place, while Salem State posted a team score of 40.50 points on the day.
Westfield State was also the runner-up in last year's New England Women's Alliance Championships, as the Owls posted a team score of 112 points in falling to Little East champion and host Southern Maine, which notched a team score of 125 points. Worcester State placed fourth in the Alliance standings with a team score of 101 points.

Now in its 39th season of existence, the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is comprised of eight state member institutions that sponsor 17 championships in NCAA Division III play. Over 2,600 student-athletes participate in intercollegiate athletics at MASCAC members Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College and compete for league titles in the sports of baseball, men's & women's basketball, men's & women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, men's & women's soccer, softball, men's & women's indoor and outdoor track & field and women's volleyball.
