Westfield State Sweeps MASCAC Track & Field Championships
Westfield State College's men's and women's outdoor track & field teams completed a sweep of the 2007 MASCAC Championships held at Fitchburg State College.

FITCHBURG, MA, April 28, 2007 - The Southern Maine women's team scored 173 points and the Westfield State men's team earned 157 points to capture champonship honors at the 2007 New England Alliance men's and women's outdoor track championships on Saturday afternoon at Fitchburg State College.
The meet was scored as three separate meets; the Alliance portion in which all schools competed and the MASCAC and Little East Conference meets. The Westfield men have won all 10 New England Alliance titles and also Saturday the Owls captured their 11 straight MASCAC crown and 24th in the past 25 years.
In the women's division of the Alliance Meet, the Huskies' 173 points topped second place UMass-Dartmouth (129) and third place Eastern Connecticut (101). Keene State finished fourth with 94 points, followed by Rhode Island College (74), Westfield State (73), Bridgewater State (38), Salem State (29), Fitchburg State (24), Worcester State (22), UMass-Boston (17) and Mass. Maritime (6).
The top three teams in the men's division of the Alliance Meet were evenly matched as Westfield (157) grabbed the title, Eastern Connecticut (136.5) finished second and UMass-Dartmouth (124) was third. Worcester State took fourth with 72.5 points, followed by Southern Maine (67.5), Rhode Island College (66), Keene State (54), Salem State (37), Fitchburg State (26.5), Bridgewater State (22), UMass-Boston (13), and Mass. Maritime (4).
Southern Maine (172) also captured the Little East women's championship, followed by UMass-Dartmouth (135), Eastern Connecticut (103), Keene State (88), Rhode Island College (85), and UMass-Boston (25).
Eastern Connecticut edged UMass-Dartmouth 181 to 152 and Southern Maine took third place with 82.5 points in the Little East championship. Rhode Island College was fourth with 72 points, Keene State took fifth (71.5) and UMass-Boston rounded out the field in the Little East with 37 points.
The Westfield State women captured the MASCAC Championship, scoring 257 points to take their 10th consecutive MASCAC title. Salem State (89) took second place and Bridgewater State rounded out the top three with 83 points. Fitchburg State (69) was fourth, followed by Worcester State (65) and Mass. Maritime (14).
On the men's side of the MASCAC championship, Westfield State completed the sweep, 253 points to take the title. Worcester State placed second 147, Fitchburg was third with 93 points, Brigdewater took fourth at 52 points, Salem State was fifth (48) and Mass. Maritime rounded out the field (24).
Southern Maine's Melissa Bellemore was a double-winner in the pole vault (10-03m) and the long jump (5.18m) while teammate Emily Artsani won the 200 at 26.13 and the 400 at 59.42. Rhode Island College's Kayla Fleming was the only other double winner in the Alliance portion of the women's meet, winning the high jump (5-05m) and the 800 in 2:23.83.
On the men's side of the Alliance, Salem State's Eddie Bynum grabbed firsts in the 100 (10.78) and the 200 (21.91), while Eric Lonergan of RIC won the 1500 at 3:56.06 and the 5000 meters with a time of 15:30.23 and UMass-Dartmouth's Jonathan Garcia won the 110 hurdles (15.19) and the triple jump (13.95m).
Westfield's Marlee Berg was a triple-winner in the long jump (4.95m), triple jump (10.33m) and the 200 (27.41) in the MASCAC women's championship while Westfield's John Messer placed first in the 800 (1:57.44) and the 1500 (4:01.62) and Matt Leeds of Worcester State won the long jump (6.91m) and triple jump (13.28m). Bynum won the 100 and 200. Kyle Wilson of Fitchburg State set a MASCAC record in the pole vault with a height of 14-09 meters.
In the Little East women's championship, Artsan won the 200 and 400, Fleming took the 800 and high jump, Nidia Gonzalez-Lopez of Eastern Conn. won the 5000 at 20:10.84 as well as the 10000 (41:55.86) and Bellemore took the pole vault and long jump.
On the men's side of the Little East championships, Lonergan won the 5000 and 15000, Garcia took the 110 hurdles and triple jump, Matt Zagura of Eastern Connecticut took first in the shot put (13.92m) and hammer throw (53.83), and Will Kopplin of Eastern Connecticut won the javelin with a distance of 55.79 meters and he threw the discus 53.83 meters to take first in that event as well.
