GORHAM, Maine -- Westfield State College captured its fourth straight Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine's Costello Sports Complex Fieldhouse.
The Owls posted a team score of 217 points to outdistance runner-up Fitchburg State's team total of 172 points, as Worcester State placed third overall with a team score of 66 points. Bridgewater State finished fourth in the competition with 58 points, while Salem State was fifth with a total of eight points.
Westfield State had eight different individuals captured conference crowns in their respective events on the day, as seniors Marc Gomes (Springfield, Mass.) and Brandon Palmer (Ludlow, Mass.) paced the Owls by taking top honors in the 200 meters (22.80) and triple jump (13.97 meters), respectively. Sophomores Jonathan Joyce (Milford, Mass.) and Patrick Regan (Wilbraham, Mass.) posted victories in the 800 meters (2:00.45) and mile run (4:23.61) as well for Westfield State, which also received individual titles from freshmen Thomas Gauger (Billerica, Mass.) in the pole vault (4.19 meters), Justin Ehrhardt (Stoneham, Mass.) in the shot put (14.27 meters), Brendan Corcoran (Walpole, Mass.) in the 600 meters (1:21.98) and Anthony Frissora (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the 1,000 meters (2:40.27). The Owls also captured the title in the 4 X 800 relay, as the tandem of sophomore Dan Wood (Spencer, Mass.) and freshmen Walter Cabreja (Lowell, Mass.), Victor Silva (Dracut, Mass.) and Scott Bockus (Athol, Mass.) posted a time of 8:23.96.
Fitchburg State received individual conference championships from junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass.) in the weight throw (16.33 meters) as well as sophomores Julian Stakley (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and Michael Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass.) in the 55 meters (6.58) and 400 meters (52.05), respectively, while the Falcon tandem of Iasevoli, senior Devon Jennings (Boston, Mass.), junior Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass.) and sophomore Jimmy Petersen (Groton, Conn.) captured the 4 X 400 relay with a time of 3:31.35.
Both Worcester State and Bridgewater State each had a pair of individuals capture conference championships in their respective events, as the Lancers received first place performances from senior Matt Leeds (Bellingham, Mass.) in the long jump (6.50 meters) and sophomore Nate Starling (Braintree, Mass.) in the 55 meter hurdles (7.78), while senior Nick Ferrara (Swansea, Mass.) and freshman Stephen Wahome (Lowell, Mass.) took top honors for the Bears in the high jump (1.86) and 3,000 meters (8:53.55), respectively.
Westfield State finished as the runner-up to host Southern Maine in the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines competition from both the MASCAC and the Little East Conference, as the Huskies earned their second straight title and fifth overall with a team score of 171 points to best the Owls' total of 129 points. Fitchburg State placed fourth in the Alliance standings with 78 points, while Worcester State (38 points), Bridgewater State (23 points) and Salem State (3 points) followed in sixth, eighth and 11th places, respectively.
