Three members of Westfield State's
conference championship team were selected to the ECAC 2009
Division III New England women's soccer all-star squad.
Senior standout Meg Gearin (Groton, Mass.) was a
first-team All-New England selection and also named the New England
Division III offensive player of the year. Junior midfielder
Kate MacLellan (Wlbraham, Mass.) was an All-New
England first-team pick and senior back Alicia
Chandler (Duxbury) was a second-team selection.
"To have three of our players recognized as All-New England is
quite an accomplishment," said Westfield head coach Todd
Ditmar. "Meg, Kate and Alicia certainly deserve the honor
and it is an excellent reflection on our women's soccer
program."
Gearin, the 2009 MASCAC player of the year, set school records for
goals (19) and points (42) in a season in leading the Owls to the
MASCAC title and NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
Gearin ranks second on the Owls' all-time scoring charts with 108
points (46 goals, 16 assists) despite playing only six games and
scoring eight points during her injury-riddled sophomore season.
The past two seasons she helped lead Westfield to an aggregate
record of 31-7-2, two MASCAC championships, and two NCAA Tournament
berths. The Owls set a school record for victories in a season in
2009 with a stellar 16-2-2 mark.
MacLellan, a junior midfielder, set a school record for assists in
a season with 15; she ranks seventh nationally in assists per game.
She is tied for first in career assists (31) and ranks fifth on the
Owls' career scoring chart with 83 points.
Chandler, a senior back, was an anchor of the Westfield defense
that limited opponents to 14 goals in 20 games. She also scored 13
points (5 goals, 3 assists) this season.
