Worcester, MA --- Sophomore cornerback Graham Asum (Marlboro, MA) has been selected to this week's D3football.com Team of the Week after his performance in a 30-18 triumph over Westfield State this past weekend. Asum was the only player from the Northeast named to the national weekly squad.
Asum, grabbed four interceptions for 113 yards as he brought one back for a 52-yard score in the second quarter in their victory against the Owls. Asum would finish the game with four tackles (three solo) as his return yardage was just six yards away from the all-time mark set by Tim Baines in 1987.
Asum is currently tied with teammate Cameron Jones (Stow, MA) for the NEFC lead in interceptions with four while he is tied for 11th with five passes defended. Asum is also tied for third in the NCAA Division III with six other players in total interceptions. Asum's 22 tackles (16 solo) are 11th best among the leagues defensive backs.
The Lancers as a team are alone in fourth place nationally with 10 team interceptions, one off Monmouth (IL), St. John's (MN) and Wooster who are tied atop in first place.
The WSU player named to the D3football.com Team of the Week was Tom Szalno who blocked three PAT’s in a 32-31 triumph over Maine Maritime in 2008. Earlier in the week, Asum was tabbed as the NEFC and the ECAC Division III North Defensive Player of the Week.
The Lancers (3-1, 1-0 NEFC Bogan) will face off against the defending NEFC Champion Mariners (2-1, 0-1 NEFC Bogan) on Saturday at 1 PM.
