McKoy Picks Up Second NEFWA Gold Helmet Award
After a record breaking weekend, Western Connecticut State running back Octavias McKoy has been named the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers’ Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award recipient for the second time this season.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a record breaking weekend, Western Connecticut State running back Octavias McKoy has been named the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers’ Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award recipient for the second time this season.
This is the third straight week and fourth time this year a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football athlete has received the award. Kevin Bumpus of Worcester State and DaVon Fuller of UMass Dartmouth were the other two recipients.
Rushing for an NCAA record 455 yards on Saturday, McKoy broke the previous record of 441 yards set by Marietta's Dante Brown in 1996. For the third time this season, he finished with five touchdowns including two in the second half that helped the Colonials pull away after a 28-28 deadlock to beat Worcester State, 55-35.
Besides nabbing most rushing yards in a single game, the senior from Stratford, Conn., is first in Division III total rushing yards on the season (1,556), rushing yards per game (222.3) and scoring (19.7 points per game). He also has laid claim to the top two spots for single game rushing and all-purpose yards.
It has been an award winning week for McKoy as he has earned an ESPN College Football helmet sticker, an honor which is normally given to top performers at the Division I level, MASCAC Offensive Player of the Week, Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast Offensive Player of the Week, USA Football DIII Offensive Player of the Week and Beyond Sports Network Athlete of the Week.
The highlight of the week came on Monday night when ESPN invited McKoy to Bristol, Conn. for a live interview on SportsCenter. Video of the interview may be found by clicking here.
McKoy and the Colonials return to the gridiron this weekend when they match up with the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. They enter the weekend tied for second with Bridgewater State in the MASCAC's inaugural football season.
