PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University men's ice hockey senior Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) has been selected as an alternate for Team USA for the upcoming Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games.
Abbate, the reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Player of the Year and PSU's first AHCA All American, was selected as one of a handful of alternates in addition to the team's 23-man roster.
"This was a really difficult process for the staff," said Team USA head coach Mark Taylor, who also leads the Hobart College team. "We like the balance of the group and know there were enough players interested that we could have made up two rosters. We think we have a very good group including some players in reserve that may be included [depending on injury or illness] prior to our final roster submission on January 10."
The 12-team tournament kicks off on January 11, with Team USA, Great Britain, Korea, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, and Hungary making up Pool B. Pool B's round robin games will take place at Cheel Rink on the campus of Clarkson University, while Pool A, consisting of Canada, Japan, Sweden, Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Latvia, will play at SUNY-Canton Rink.
The top two teams from each pool will move on to the medal round at Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, January 21, with the gold medal game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN, taking place on January 22.
"I'm happy for Myles to be recognized among some of the best players at our level," said PSU head coach Craig Russell. "Not only is he our best overall forward, but he's also a tireless worker and pushes himself each and every day. He deserves this recognition and, if given the chance, we know he will shine within this group of extraordinary players."
The winter FISU World University Games is held every two years as a celebration of international university sports and culture. With several thousand student-athletes competing in each event edition, the FISU World University Games is among the world's largest winter multi-sports competition.
